Adult Beginners / Taster Sessions
A taster session is £20 – if you book 4 sessions at once your 4th session is free!
- Want to give kayaking a try? Get started with our taster sessions! We’ll teach you the skills and techniques to become a paddler and build your confidence on the water.
- You will be supplied with a buoyancy aid, paddle, and a kayak. We also have showers for you to stay warm afterwards!
- They run at 9.30am on Saturdays for 1 hour from May/June to September (weather dependant).
- These sessions are for people aged 18 and over
- You must be able to swim 25metres in light clothing to take part. (But we’ll always aim to stay in the boat!)
Note: If you are an experienced paddler who would like to join Royal, please contact the club captain Tristram Turner, captain@royalcanoeclub.com, to discuss your options.
What to wear/bring with you
- For paddling we recommend lightweight clothing such as thermal tops and leggings. Several thin layers are always much better than hoodies or sweatshirts.
- You need to be able to swim in your clothes. There’s only a small chance of ending up in the river, but you need to be at peace with the possibility!
- You should wear clothes that allow you to move freely and that you don’t mind getting wet. If it’s rainy or windy then you might appreciate a light windproof top.
- If you have some lightweight shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or neoprene shoes they can be worn but aren’t essential, you can paddle with bare feet.
- You must always bring a change of clothes and a towel to shower after paddling on the river.
- Please wear the appropriate clothing. If sunny please use sun-cream, wear a hat, and sunglasses (ideally on a string so you don’t lose them in the water!)
Changing facilities
- The clubhouse has changing rooms and showers so bring a change of clothing and a towel.
- As with any activity on a river or lake, you should wash your hands after going on the river.
- There are lockers to keep your valuables in – you will need to bring your own padlock for these.
Medical conditions
Please let the coaches know of any medical conditions that might be relevant before you get on the water.
Weather
Occasionally bad weather such as high winds or fast flow from heavy rainfall may mean we need to cancel a session as our priority is keeping everyone safe. If we need to cancel we’ll always aim to do this 24hours in advance. We’ll aim to rearrange the session where we can.
